Pollinator Week!

Happy Pollinator Week!

We love our pollinators here at Friends of the Rail Park, they are an integral part of our world! Every June, we get to spend a little extra time appreciating the plants and critters that keep our ecosystems healthy and help make our food!

What is a Pollinator?

You might think of bees when you think of pollinators (and you wouldn’t be wrong) but, they’re also birds, butterflies, beetles, bats, and rats! Any insects, mammals, or birds that are attracted to flowers' bright colors or nectar are pollinators! They move from flower to flower feeding, and inadvertently fertilize them as they transfer pollen.

Learn more about Pollinators at one of our June 21st events or celebrate on your own by playing Pollinator Bingo with us on social media!

How Can We Support Our Pollinators?

So you want to help out? Great! Here are three things that you can do to help our pollinator populations!

  1. Plant a Pollinator Garden!
Make sure that plants are native to our region (these will need less water), and in areas with ample sunlight where they can grow tall and happy. There are lots of local greenhouses that sell pollinator seeds specifically for our area but look for those with milkweed, goldenrod, and aster. Bees and butterflies love these!
  2. Do Less!
Allow the fallen leaves in your yard to just be! Pollinators love to take shelter in leaf piles over the winter, so just doing nothing can help to support them!
  3. Support Your Local Pollinators!
Show some love to your community beekeepers and purchase your honey at a farmers market (click here to find the closest one to you!) or support our pollinator gardens and become a Rail Park Member here!
