Kudos to our friends over at Hidden City Philadelphia for showing us and hundreds of other revelers a great time last Saturday—simultaneously demonstrating the potential of the street level spaces along and beneath the Viaduct. The 1100 block of Pearl Street was the place to be from dusk to well into the evening to celebrate the kick-off of the 2013 Hidden City Festival.
The block party was a testament to Hidden City’s ability to immerse Philadelphians in our city’s rich past by reanimating forgotten spaces and sparking conversations about their future. Seeing the area beneath the Viaduct brought to life that evening inspired even greater motivation to see the Rail Park itself become a place for gathering, celebrating, and connecting with Philadelphia’s history. Thanks, Hidden City! Thanks also to the many great performers of the evening, including the New Sound Brass Band, which used the masonry arch under the Viaduct at Pearl Street as a giant amplifier for their rendition of the contextually-related "Under the Boardwalk," among other tunes--check out the video below.
