Looking back at 2019

By Shawn Sheu, Director of Community Engagement & Programs

In many ways, 2019 was a landmark year at the Rail Park. We activated the park with our first season of programming, listened to our neighbors through focus groups and engagement, and grew strong community-rooted partnerships with residents, organizations, and small businesses.

In 2019, we connected over 8,000 Philadelphians to the Rail Park through 60 inspiring public programs.

Alongside our neighbors and visitors from all over the region, we explored the Rail Park with nature walks, festivals, pop-up markets, astronomy nights, performances, movies, and more.

Through our Parks for Chinatown partnership with Asian Arts Initiative and Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation, we worked to grow local ownership of the Rail Park through community-driven programs and engagement. We asked people to try yoga for the first – or 100th time through a Spanish-English yoga series with Roots2Rise. In partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia and the American Composers Forum, we explored public space through groundbreaking art installations with Site/Sound: Revealing the Rail Park.

What else made 2019 so amazing? YOU!

This year, you brought laughter and joy to the Rail Park. You had conversations with neighbors.  You took walks, watched the seasons change, enjoyed dance and music performances, stargazed, and made new friends. You were one of the 150+ people who volunteered with us.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to our community of supporters, members, neighbors, partners, and volunteers like you. We can’t wait to see what 2020 brings.
